I am advocating for progressive values, including universal health coverage, stable and enhanced school funding, smaller K-12 class sizes, and increased protection of our environment. As a seventh generation Oregonian, I am committed to Oregon’s future. My public service inside and outside the legislature gives me the experience necessary to get the job done. As Senator Joanne Verger’s Legislative Assistant, I played a key role in 2005 and 2007 in expanding the Bottle Bill. I also worked with a coalition of public health and school advocates bringing healthy food to our schools. I was also the State Organizer for Stand for Children and worked with parents, teachers, and concerned citizens to lobby successfully the legislature to appropriate $260 million in additional funds for school children. The challenges facing Oregon today are no less daunting; however I know they are surmountable. I believe that education counts, that Oregonians deserve good health, and that we must keep Oregon forever green. From real life experiences, I know the importance of living wage jobs and affordable housing. I will work tirelessly to protect a woman’s right to choose, strongly support full marriage equality, and be an outspoken voice against all forms of discrimination. Without question, education is the key to opportunity. I believe we have the responsibility to create the best learning environment for our children. We must never be complacent when faced with inadequate or unstable school funding, one of the shortest school years in the country, or burgeoning class sizes. I have knocked on over 10,000 doors in southeast and northeast Portland, I am no stranger to challenges and hard work. Climbing the fourteen-thousand foot peaks in Colorado faster than anyone in the world at first seemed an impossible goal. Running fifty kilometers in fifty states, in seventy-five days, appeared at first unattainable. However, with tireless dedication and teamwork, I achieved these goals. With leadership by the legislature, we can continue to build on the successes achieved in the 2007 legislative session. Please join me in this campaign to promote progressive values and advocate for green, clean, livable, and sustainable neighborhoods in Southeast and Northeast Portland. Thank you for your interest. I appreciate your support! Sincerely,
